Vikings’ comeback falls short
January 2, 2023

The Cape boys’ basketball team fell 76-70 to James M. Bennett Dec. 30 at the Governor’s Challenge at the Wicomico Civic Center in Salisbury, Md.

With prolific scorer Dew Zimmerman missing due to illness, three Vikings hit in double figures in the highly contested matchup.

Tyrone Tolson, Jack Schell and Trey Leggins dropped 18, 17 and 16 points, respectively. Dylan Fannin and Timmy Hitchcock each added five.

The first quarter ended in a 14-14 tie. The Clippers turned up the heat in the second period, outscoring the Vikings 14-3 to garner a 42-31 halftime lead.

The third period found the teams matching buckets, with the Clippers taking a 60-49 advantage into the fourth. The Vikings fought hard in the final eight minutes, but came up six points short.

“We had to adjust quickly tonight,” said head coach Steve Re. “Our game plan and matchups were affected immediately before tip-off when we heard Drew wasn’t going to play. It took us some time to adjust, but we did a really good job in the second half. We were down and clawed our way back to give us a chance to win the game. Turnovers and execution continue to be an issue for us, but we are getting better. The young guys came in and gave us a great spark. They are getting better each day.”

The 4-2 Vikings host the 1-5 Smyrna Eagles Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Cape.
