Cape boys’ volleyball falls to Appo

April 7, 2025

Cape boys’ volleyball moved to 2-1 on the season with a 26-28, 22-25 and 24-26 loss to Appoquinimink April 4 at home.

Cape setter Jason Harper-Rickards led the Vikings by putting up 30 assists and bumping seven digs. Lawson Whaley powered at the net with 12 kills and put up nine digs. Senior Bryce Patterson knocked down eight kills. Ryder Van Horn had 10 digs and five kills. Braxton Figgs slammed seven kills and blocked three Jaguars’ kill attempts.

“Coming into tonight, we knew it was going to be a battle,” said Cape head coach Tyler Coupe. “Appo has a ton of size at the net and really consistent first-touch ball control. They played an extremely scrappy game, keeping a lot of plays alive and continuing to apply pressure on us. I thought coming off our match Tuesday, in which we were pretty flat, I was really happy with our grit. We put ourselves in some poor positions each set, not being able to side out quick enough, allowing Appo to go on five- or six-point runs. What was promising, however, was our ability to fight back each of those sets. To lose a match by a combined seven points shows the competitive nature. Our first contact in rally needs to be cleaner, especially when its a free ball or easier ball to pass situation. We served consistently, which is great, and our offense will continue to fine-tune itself to be more terminal and efficient.“

Riley Buzby led the Jags with 16 kills and 10 digs.

The Vikings will travel to Caesar Rodney Thursday, April 10.
