September 25, 2023

Cape football blew over Lake Forest like Tropical Storm Ophelia Sept. 22 at Jim Blades Stadium, winning 48-7 to improve to 3-0 on the season. It’s the best start for the Vikings since 2014.

Cape is averaging 41.7 points per game while yielding just seven points per game.

Bell-cow back Maurki James led the way for the Vikings with touchdown runs of five, 30 and six yards. Other touchdowns were scored by Jameson Tingle on an eight-yard run, Brenn Scott on a 28-yard reception from Tingle, Machi Savage on a one-yard run and Camryn Joyner on a one-yard run.

The score was 28-7 at the half. Cape controlled the second half 20-0 for the final score of 48-7.

Wilson Ingerski was six-for-six on point-after attempts.

Cape will host the Silver Eagles of Hodgson at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 29, on First Responders and Military Night.

Hodgson is 2-1 with wins over Howard 43-12 and St. Georges Tech 20-17. The lone loss was to Caravel 28-13.

Hodgson was 1-9 in 2022.

Coach Mike Frederick: “Players really took the plan, believed in it and executed with great passion. That is always a recipe for success. Coaches don’t win games, as people have said for decades. Players do. And they were the difference. Major takeaways were the contributions from so many different people. Brenn Scott was a standout in all three phases.”

Frederick on Hodgson: “They look big and strong up front. Terrific athleticism on defense. Tough pair of running backs. Big time DE and explosive WR. Can beat you spreading it out or bringing in big bodies and pounding on you. This will be quite the challenge. And a fun one at that.”

Stat line - Cape had 466 yards of total offense, including 310 on the ground and 156 in the air. The Vikings amassed 19 first downs and were 4-for-7 on third downs. James had 22 carries for 250 yards and three touchdowns. Tingle was 10-for-11, passing for 156 yards and a touchdown. Lamar McCoy had three catches. James, Lucas Stevenson and Amari Jackson each had two grabs. Scott pulled in one pass.

Cape's starting offensive line is center Tyler Cohen-Kreis, guards DJ Schultze and Saul Garcia, and tackles Bodie Frederick and Gawain Curtis. Scott is the tight end/h-back.
