Cape football is working on its ABCs in the early scrimmage season, giving quarterbacks Dillon Adams, Nolan Brown and Hank Coveleski a chance to run with the first offense. Tavon Scott quarterbacked the team the last two seasons.
Dillon Adams, a junior, was a successful junior varsity quarterback; Nolan Brown, just a sophomore, is so savvy he could coach the position; and Hank Coveleski, a senior, snapped as a junior on the lacrosse field and looks ready to do the quarterback job if he can win it.
“We like all three of those guys for different reasons and talk about it every day,” said coach Bill Collick. "All of the kids at all positions get plenty of opportunities to win starting jobs."
Cape scrimmaged Seaford and McKean Aug. 21 at Legends Stadium and did well, but both those squads couldn’t match up in numbers or talent with Cape.
Seaford had about 20 guys in uniform while McKean suited up less than 30 compared to Cape’s 85 in uniform.
McKean, a Division II school, was 0-10 last season, while Seaford was 1-9.
The Vikings' offense rolls with Mike Williams at fullback and flanks him with Jeremiah Smack, Rasheed Woods, Ben Ashby, Briley Brooks, Parker Savage, Robbie Neall, Jordan Reed, Hykeem Evans, Erik Stancofski and others.
“We got guys who can carry the football and a bunch of athletes on defense,” Collick said. “We'll see how we do along the line of scrimmage next Friday at Lake (6 p.m.) when we scrimmage Lake Forest and Middletown."
Lake was 10-0 last season before losing to Hodgson 22-13 in the first round of the state tournament.
Middletown lost to William Penn in last year's state finals 42-14.
“We will get a chance Friday night to see who the players are,” Collick said. “But we’re most concerned with getting all our players to game one at Cape May on Sept. 12 healthy and ready to roll."
