Cape Gazette photographer Dan Cook wins national award
Cape Gazette photographer Dan Cook recently took first place in the Sports Category of the 2019 National Newspaper Association's Publishers’ Auxiliary Photo Contest.
"Mr. Cook’s photo won the sports category because his perfect alignment really caught judges’ eyes," said Associate Director and Managing Editor Kate Richardson. "Plus, the great colors and focus were awesome."
The photo was of Lewes/Rehoboth Major League All-Star Lawson Whaley watching a ball into his glove while playing right field in the Lewes/Rehoboth 3-2 win over Lower Sussex July 16 in the District 3 tournament.
"Dan Cook's unique image certainly goes beyond the sometimes mundane coverage of local sports," said judge Barry Locher, retired executive editor of The State Journal-Register in Springfield, Ill. "Like many readers, I suspect, when I saw the photograph, it just made me smile."
The National Newspaper Association is a Pensacola, Fla.-based nonprofit newspaper trade association founded in 1885. The organization has more than 2,300 members, making it the largest newspaper trade association in the United States.
