Cape girls’ basketball downs Eagles
The Cape girls’ basketball team capped off the regular season with a 61-44 victory over Smyrna Feb. 16. The Vikings move to 18-2, while the Eagles are 13-6.
Cape will face Woodbridge in the Henlopen Conference Championship Saturday, Feb. 25, at Dover High School.
Junior point guard Mya Maull posted 20 points to lead Cape against Smyrna. Sophomore Faith Re knocked down 17 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Freshman Amalia Fruchtman scored 12 and blocked five shots. Senior Ja’Onna Lee recorded six points, eight rebounds, seven assists and seven steals.
Sophomore forward Hayden Hudson cleaned the glass, adding 10 rebounds to pad her team-leading total of 170. She added seven blocks to reach 57 on the season.
“It was a challenging game tonight,” said Hudson. “We were fouled a lot, but we pushed through. It’s going to help us going into the tournament.”
“We came out the right way tonight for sure,” said Cape coach Pat Woods. “Our game plan was to execute through chaos. Sometimes Smyrna is deceptive with their defensive schemes. Once we started to execute, we started getting our shots and the girls were knocking them down.”
“Sometimes you’re not having your game and so you have to do different things to help the team, like playing tough defense or setting up your teammates,” said Maull. “Tonight, it was the game for me to make shots, so I did.”
Jayde Rivera led the Eagles with 17 points.
Cape boys smash Eagles
The Cape boys’ basketball team started hot and never looked back Feb. 16, defeating Smyrna 84-63. It was the Vikings’ fifth road game in its last six overall.
Cape jumped out to a 30-15 lead after one quarter and cruised to a 21-point win. Drew Zimmerman led the way with 19 points. Joining him in double figures were Trey Leggins with 14 and Tyrone Tolson with 11. Ten different Vikings registered points in the win.
Cape drained 12 three-pointers in the win, including four from Leggins and three each from Zimmerman and Tolson.
