Cape freshman Dania Cannon hit five shots from behind the three-point line and scored a season-high 21 points, as the Vikings downed winless St. Georges Tech 61-48 Dec. 20 at Cape.
Guards Sydney Pedersen and Alia Marshall hit the twine for 11 points each. Pedersen had two three-pointers. Abby E’Nama blocked four Hawks shot attempts.
“We controlled the first half,” said Cape coach Lauren Carra. “But in the second half, we started to play a little frantic. They started to pressure us, and we kinda fell into their pressure and started throwing the ball all over the gym. But that’s one of the downsides of having a young team. They need to learn to control the pace of the game.”
Cape went into the halftime up 38-22, but the Hawks came out on fire in the third quarter, outscoring the Vikings 12-9. Each team posted 14 in the fourth period, and the final buzzer had the Vikings winning 61-48.
Guard Carly Truitt just scored three points in the game, but she powered inside despite her small stature, dishing off five assists to the big girls.
“Usually I don’t get outside shots,” said the junior guard. “The only way I get results is to go inside to the big man position and make things happen. We are on a 2-0 run, and we’re looking up for the remaining season.”
Cape travels to St. Elizabeth for the Diamond State Games Tuesday, Dec. 27, where the Vikings open tournament play with the Perryville High School Panthers from Cecil County, Md.
