January 9, 2023

The Cape girls’ basketball team moved to 7-2 on the season with a 75-20 blowout of Milford Jan. 5 at home.

Four Vikings scored in double figures as the home squad ran out to a 32-4 first-quarter lead and never let up, stretching the advantage to 52-12 at halftime. The freely substituting Vikings outscored Milford 23-8 in the second half, shutting out the Bucs in the fourth quarter to garner the running-clock victory.

Mya Maull and Faith Re paced the Vikings with 20 points each, as both hit four three-pointers. Maull added seven steals, three assists and six rebounds.

Sophomore Hayden Hudson tallied 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Ja’Onna Lee scored 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Amalia Fruchtman collected five rebounds, three steals, three assists and two blocks. Grace Totten snagged five rebounds. Lulu Rishko swiped three steals and had a block.

Jay’Lyn Slater and Megan Smith came off the bench to record eight points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal.

“The bigs definitely take pressure off of the guards with scoring because they can create their own shots, and by getting offensive rebounds and another opportunity to score,” said Maull. ”When we are being pressed, the bigs help with getting the ball up the court and getting it to our open teammates. Coming into the second half of the season, I think giving the starters more rest and the bench more playing time will make it so that we are able to be more aggressive while we are in the game and play our best.”

The Vikings JV squad dropped a close 26-23 loss to a tough Ursuline team.

Maya Yngve led the Vikings with eight points and five rebounds. Kayden Borge Williams hit for six with nine rebounds. Jurnee White tallied five points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Kiersten Smith grabbed five rebounds. Sydney Whetzel registered four rebounds and two blocked shots.

Madelyn Angil grabbed four rebounds, while Jerney Haines and Grace Feather played tough on the hardwood.
