Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540 celebrates Mother’s Day

May 19, 2019

In a traditional and moving ceremony, Cape Henlopen Lodge 2540 Order of Elks celebrated Mother’s Day with Exalted Ruler Ralph Patterson presiding. Patterson opened the celebration with a beautiful tribute to mothers, and each officer had a few words to say about the meaning of motherhood and how deeply lives are affected by these nurturing women.

The Elks’ formal celebration of Mother’s Day began in 1918  as a tribute to the women who shape individual destinies.  This tradition continues today in every lodge. In the Cape Henlopen Lodge, as each woman entered the meeting room, they were given either a red carnation, signifying a living mother or white carnation, indicating one who has passed away.

After the ceremony, a lovely luncheon was served to all guests and mothers were offered a complimentary mimosa to celebrate the day.   It was a delightful afternoon honoring the importance of motherhood and mothers everywhere.

Elks love this country and desire to preserve its cherished institutions, traditions and values. They believe the dream of a better world becomes reality when shaped by enough willing hearts and hands.
