Cape Henlopen Elks support veterans, Lewes firefighters

April 5, 2024

Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540 recently presented a $1,000 donation to the Lewes Fire Department, whose officers expressed their thanks.

Fire Department President Richard Bunting and Fire Chief Greg Bennett said last year had been a very busy one for the fire company, with 974 fire alarms and 5,919 emergency medical services responses. Most of the department’s expenses are operational, such as apparatus, equipment, staffing, fuel and supplies.

The need for support for local fire companies increases consistently as growth in the Cape Region has skyrocketed.

The Elks also have a longtime supportive relationship with the Delaware Veterans Home in Milford. The home provides veterans with long-term care in nursing, family wholeness and enrichment.

Recently, the Elks veterans committee responded to provide various personal hygiene items and reading material for the four women and 65 men currently residing in the four units.

Committee members purchased and presented $1,000 worth of products, including 70 bottles of body wash, 25 electric shavers and several large-print Reader’s Digests.
