Cape Henlopen Food Basket’s supply is threatened

April 1, 2025

The Cape Henlopen Food Basket is one of many organizations in the area working to address food insecurity. In 2024, the food basket filled 4,085 requests for groceries and, so far in 2025, the number served by the food basket is up 8%.

The USDA provides most of our groceries and meat, either directly or through the Food Bank of Delaware. At present, this USDA food supply is threatened; the U.S. Department of Agriculture has halted scheduled shipments of food aid.

Cathy Kanefsky, president and CEO of the Food Bank of Delaware, described this situation in her commentary in the March 25 issue of the Cape Gazette. In addition to legislative intervention, she urges “partnerships with businesses, community-based organizations and individuals willing to contribute food or financial support.”

The Cape Henlopen Food Basket has been the beneficiary of much support from a very generous Cape community. Thank you. As we move through these uncertain times, we hope this support will continue to sustain our mission and that of other food banks helping our community.
