Cape Henry spoils Sussex Academy boys’ lax weekend 13-6
The fellas laxing it up for Sussex Academy opened the season with a 7-3 win at Delmar March 27, but they could not maintain their flight path against a skilled Cape Henry Collegiate School (Va.) March 29, as they fell 13-6.
“It was just two different teams; Thursday, we came out with fight, we came out with drive, we came out to play, we ran our offense, we ran our clear successfully, and we communicated everything,” said coach Andrew Fox. “[Saturday] it didn't show up til the second half. We played scared. We saw kids that were a little bit bigger than us and chirped a little bit differently than the other teams.”
Cape Henry dominated the first half and earned a running clock by the time the whistle blew for the third quarter. Freshman Cooper Hagy’s goal helped Sussex Academy see the chances they were passing up on.
Fox was pleased with the play of his goalie, Jackson Hagy, and face-off man Taco Meszaros, but thought his offense needed to play the first half the way they did in the second.
“They got to fight for what they want,” Fox said. “Nothing comes easy in life; nothing comes easy on the lacrosse field.”
Although it was the same team that took the field to start the second half, it was a group that looked more confident. As they fought back, sophomore Anthony Tattoli completed a hat trick, and Gideon Sammons and Nicholas Warren each picked up goals. Ben Warren finished the contest with two assists.
Sussex Academy will need to rebound quickly from the loss, as the next three games could decide the winner of the Henlopen South. The Seahawks travel to Indian River Wednesday, April 2, before a home showdown against Delmar under the lights at 7 p.m., Friday, April 4. They will run it back against IR, this time at home, Wednesday, April 9 at 5:30 p.m.
“They have these games circled on their calendar,” Fox said.
