Cape Junior Pee Wee football defeats Dover

Vikings head to Regionals
October 28, 2019

The Cape Vikings Junior Pee Wee Pop Warner football team defeated Dover 26-0 Oct. 26 at Fillmore Clifton Stadium in Bridgeville to advance to regionals.

The Vikings started off strong, as Lamar McCoy took a handoff from Jameson Tingle and ran 50 yards for a score, but it was called back due to a holding penalty. The first quarter ended in a 0-0 tie.

The Vikings would not be denied in the second stanza, as Tingle dove two yards on a quarterback sneak to give the Vikings a 6-0 lead. The point-after attempt failed. With 30 seconds left in the first half, Tingle hit Amari Jackson for a 22-yard touchdown pass. The point-after attempt failed, sending the Vikings into the halftime break with a 12-0 lead.

The third quarter ended without anyone reaching pay dirt, but with eight minutes left in the contest, McCoy scored from 10 yards out. Dell Richards ran in the one-point conversion to boost the lead to 19-0. Tyrone Handy added an insurance score with 3:50 left. A successful one-point conversion made the final 26-0.

“It felt really good to come away with the win,” Tingle said. “We have to work harder and harder to finish our job and, hopefully, we’ll get a championship.”

“My teammates did well today,” Richards said. “The line really opened it up for me. I think we’ll do good in the regionals. I love my teammates and, hopefully, we can bring home a championship.”

“It feels good being No. 1,” said running back Anthony Francis. “This game will make us better and get us prepared for the regionals.”

“It was special for the kids,” said head coach Eddie Ghabour. “I was just happy they got to have that moment. We’ve been preaching all year teamwork and don’t be selfish, and at the end, you’ll enjoy a championship better as a team than as an individual. Our line has been amazing all year. The offensive line doesn’t always get the credit because they don’t get the touchdowns, but the entire third and fourth quarter, we didn’t pass one time. We ran up the middle and the line drove the entire time. It was amazing to watch kids that age do that. This was our best team game all year.”

Time and place for the regional competition have yet to be determined.
