The Cape major softball all-stars struck first in their July 1 elimination game against Laurel, but they were unable to hold onto the lead, losing 8-3 in Roxana.

Ainsley Clem struck out nine over six innings, but Laurel’s approach at the plate led to eight walks. It allowed the victors to score eight runs off just five hits.

Addison Wilson singled with one out in the bottom of the first and swiped second before coming around to score on Alexia Crossan’s ground out to get the scoring started. Laurel responded by tying the game in the top of the second. They took a 5-1 lead following a four-run third inning. Giving up two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, Cape trailed 8-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Crossan and Cali Smith each singled with one out before executing a double steal with two outs and Clem at the plate. Capitalizing on the chance to help herself out, Clem smashed a liner to left to plate the pair and slid into second to keep the scoring threat alive. She stole third but was left there when the inning ended with the score at 8-3.

Bree Terhune reached on a one-out infield single after a no-run top of the sixth inning. She stole second with two outs, but remained there when Laurel secured the final out of the game, handing Cape an 8-3 loss and knocking them out of the District 3 tournament.
