Cape Marching Band boosters seek donations and volunteers

Premiere home-game performance set Sept. 28
September 13, 2018

The Cape Henlopen Marching Band, under the direction of Chris Burkhart, took the field at Legends Stadium Aug. 17 for a preview performance which concluded the 2018 marching band camp.

Soul, this season’s Motown-inspired program, is led by drum major Will Warick and assistant drum major Marley Enright. The band’s premiere performance will be Friday, Sept. 28, during halftime of the first Cape Henlopen Vikings home football game versus the Smyrna Eagles. This year the band will perform at 10 football games and six local parades, and host the Bands at the Beach showcase Sunday, Nov. 4.

All band members were required to attend the camp and practiced daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in muggy 90-degree heat. There are currently 105 members making up the band, color guard and dance team. The week wrapped up with an invitation to family and friends to attend the preview, followed by an ice cream social. Chip Hearn, owner of The Ice Cream Store in Rehoboth Beach, generously donated all the ice cream and toppings for the social. The cool treats were especially appreciated considering the intense temperatures.

The marching band is supported by Cape Henlopen Instrumental Music Boosters. The organization helps with fundraising and supports all the marching band’s needs. The music boosters meet the third Monday of every month in the band room at Cape Henlopen High School. “The Music Boosters welcome all parents and guardians to come to the monthly meetings and join the effort of supporting the music program at Cape,” said current Boosters President Patty Maull.

The marching band, known as the Pride of the Cape, depends on volunteers and donations from the community. Direct financial donations are also greatly appreciated and accepted, and can be sent to Cape Henlopen High School, Attn: Music Boosters, 1250 Kings Hwy., Lewes, DE 19958.
