Cape Region has many cultural opportunities

April 4, 2025

I read with some interest the recent letter to the editor from Janet Le Digabel titled “Wrong location for Belle Mead project.” I agree with her zoning concerns.

What drew my attention even more than the zoning issue was the statement in the letter, “a resident who works in human resources placing physicians spoke about how physicians aren’t moving to the area because they are looking for culture – theater, parks and upscale shopping.”

As the recently retired executive director at Clear Space Theatre Company, I’d like to remind the unknown human resources person, Beebe Hospital recruiters and Cape Gazette readers about culture in Sussex County.

In addition to year-round live theater at Clear Space Theatre, residents enjoy live stage productions at Milton Theatre, Second Street and Possum Point Playhouse. Other cultural opportunities include: Coastal Concerts, Cinema Art Theater movies and the Rehoboth Art League. Book lovers enjoy the annual History Book Festival in Lewes, programs at the Lewes and Rehoboth libraries, and book author talks hosted by Browseabout Books. There are a variety of performing organizations: CAMP Rehoboth Chorus, Mid-Atlantic Symphony, Rehoboth Concert Band and Capital Ringers are only a few examples. Residents wishing to take a short drive south on Route 1 can attend cultural events at the Freeman Arts Pavilion and the Ocean City Performing Arts Center. Many of these groups also offer educational opportunities for persons of all ages interested in the arts.

The above list is by no means comprehensive or complete. Interested readers can always consult Delaware Scene, a web page sponsored by the Delaware Division of the Arts, for a complete list of cultural organizations and events in Sussex County.
