The Cape Henlopen School District recently received a grant issued by Giant Food through its Nourishing Our Youth initiative.
Between June 17 and Aug. 11, Giant Food invited its customers to round up at the register and help support local school districts’ food and meal programs.
Overall, the nationwide program raised more than $765,000 to address the issue of hunger throughout local public school districts within the communities they serve.
“The grant issued to our district has allowed us to cover the cost of the reduced meals for qualified families within our district,” said Dr. Jason Hale, Cape district director of operations. “The funds will support those families for the remainder of this school year. In addition, we were also able to provide support to the Harry K Foundation, a local organization working to defeat childhood hunger here in Delaware. This organization also works directly with our schools and district families to make sure students’ food needs are met outside of the school day.”
Families who applied and qualified for reduced meals were sent a letter through the child nutrition department. Anyone with questions regarding the letter may contact child nutrition at 302-645-1442.
