Cape senior excels on armed services aptitude test
Douglas Sartain, a senior at Cape Henlopen High School, recently achieved exceptional results on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery.
Typically taken by individuals interested in military service, the ASVAB turned into an unexpected triumph for Sartain, who decided to take the test on a last-minute whim. His was the highest score in the Cape district in more than six years. Sartain's decision to tackle the ASVAB stemmed from his desire to bolster his college resume, making the achievement even more remarkable as he navigated the test without preparation. His spontaneity paid off in the form of a standout score of 90 that has now become a source of pride for the entire Cape Henlopen community.
The ASVAB utilizes standard scores to gauge performance, with 50 representing an average score and 60 indicating an above-average result. Sartain not only surpassed the average but achieved a score of 90 that places him in the top echelon of test-takers.
According to OfficialASVAB.com, approximately half of young adults ages 18 to 23 score at or above the standard score of 50, with only 16% achieving a score at or above 60. Sartain's achievement thus stands as a testament to his exceptional abilities and sets him apart within his peer group.
He has showcased not only his academic capabilities but also his ability to excel under challenging circumstances, having lost his father in 2016. Sartain has applied for and is awaiting acceptance into the electrical engineering program at the University of Delaware under the Army National Guard and ROTC. He is on the path to officer school, aligning his aspirations with a commitment to serve his country.
The Sartain family is beaming with pride as Doug follows in the footsteps of his own uncle Doug, who received a perfect score of 99 on the ASVAB back in 1982.
