Cape should leave transportation to private sector

December 13, 2024

As a taxpayer in the Cape Henlopen School District, I question the wisdom of the district owning and operating a fleet of school buses. This could be done cheaper and more efficiently by a private contractor. Using a private contractor eliminates the need for more state employees and their state benefits, and the cost and maintenance of the buses. Which brings me to the proposal to construct a maintenance facility for buses.

A district-owned maintenance facility would, in addition to the cost of acquiring land and building a facility, require more personnel and at least one supervisor position.

It seems to me that given the sad state of education in Delaware, our school officers’ time would be better spent educating the students and leave the transportation of students to the private sector.

I would encourage everyone to reject any referendum while this proposal is still active!
