Cape rolled to a dozen bagels (shutouts) on the season Oct. 20 at Champions Stadium, hanging a half-dozen goals on a solid Woodbridge team in a 6-0 victory.
The Vikings scored with 10 seconds left in the half to go up 3-0 and basically put the game out of reach.
Cape improved to 12-1 with remaining home games versus Caesar Rodney and Polytech. The Blue Raiders dropped to 7-3 on the season and will host Christiana Monday, Oct. 24, before traveling to Delmar Tuesday, Oct. 25.
Cape’s win over Woodbridge was highlighted by newfound scoring machine Grace Wiggins, who tallied three goals and an assist. Wiggins has 11 goals over the last three games.
“Grace can create space inside the circle, and all our kids are unselfish,” said assistant coach Debbie Windett.
Single goals were scored by Avary Miller, Mackinzie Brown and Addy Basile. Cape outshot Woodbridge 19-3, with an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Blue chair quips - Delmar beat Smyrna 6-0 to remain undefeated, while the Eagles dropped to 11-2. Delmar had a 14-3 shot advantage and 15-4 edge on corners. Sussex Academy (8-3-1) beat Sussex Tech 2-1. Tower Hill had a surprising win over Archmere 3-1. The top four teams in Division I hockey are Cape (12-1), Charter School of Wilmington (10-1), Smyrna (11-2) and Caesar Rodney (9-3). Delmar leads Division II with a 13-0 record. The Wildcats are followed by Tatnall (13-1), Archmere (11-2), and Delaware Military Academy and Newark Charter (both 8-2). The Henlopen Conference Championship game – a likely rematch of Cape and Delmar – is scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, at a neutral site yet to be determined. The DIAA state tournament begins Tuesday, Nov. 8.
