“Beating Charter was a statement win for our program,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “When you look at the divide between upstate and downstate soccer, teams downstate typically don’t get the respect they might deserve from the upstate teams. The win we earned hopefully turned some heads and gave us a favorable view among our competition.”
Cape’s Danio Somoza-Lima scored at the 25-minute mark off a pass from Bradley Seneus. Eight minutes later, Kannex Camarco put a direct kick under the Force frontline and in the corner of the cage. Thomas Copeland made it 3-0 off a pass from Chris Gonzelez through a crowd in front of Charter’s goal.
After a Charter tally from Justin Lane, Cape senior Dane Palmer ended the scoring when he put a header in the back of the net off a corner from Juan Larez-Carillo.
The Vikings outshot the Force 10-4, and each team took two penalty corners.
Vikings goalie Alan Marin-Quiroz made three stops in the cage, giving him 34 on the season.
“Our guys went into the match mentally prepared to execute and to play a full match,” Kilby said. “They won a high-stakes game and played well under that pressure.”
The Vikings move into the postseason at 12-2-1, while Charter moves to 9-4-1.
The Cape coach is feeling confident about the upcoming postseason.
“This result should propel us into the state tournament with confidence,” he said. “I’m excited to see what our guys can do when we open the tournament Nov. 10.”
