Cape sophomore Austin Tyndall scored four minutes into the second overtime period to boost the Vikings to a 2-1 overtime victory over Hackettstown High School of New Jersey Sept. 16. The win moves the Vikings to 2-2-1 on the season.
Seth Benjamin slammed a ball in front and Tyndall pounded a spinning kick past goalie Shay Patel to garner the win. Tyndall had scored at the 16-minute mark of the first half to put the Vikings ahead 1-0.
“Seth made that whole second goal possible,” said Tyndall. “He beat his defender one-on-one and I just turned, spun and put it in the back of the net. It’s my first OT winner.”
Tigers senior Yasseen Zoklat scored unassisted nine minutes into the second half to tie the contest at 1-1.
The Vikings traveled to Woodside Sept. 17 and handed Polytech a 5-1 defeat, moving Cape to 3-2-1.
Senior Brady Spiegel scored four goals for the Vikings. He tallied the first at the 11-minute mark of the first half and three in the second half. He scored at the 60-minute mark, with the next just five minutes later. He finished his scoring spree at the 72-minute mark.
Tyndall added a goal at the 68th minute, giving him three goals in the two games.
Cardin Benjamin was credited with two assists, while Seth Benjamin, Evan Burris and Jack Hess each garnered a helper.
The Vikings outshot the Panthers 17-4 and held a 9-2 advantage in corners.
Cape keeper Jake Hutchison tallied three saves, while Panthers goalie James Watterton made 12 stops.
Alex Vaccaro scored the lone Polytech goal.
“Winning back-to-back games on back-to-back days is a very hard thing to do,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “I’m very pleased with our ability to show up two days in a row and get two crucial wins, one of which is against an out-of-state opponent with a lot of talent and the other being a Henlopen North team. Beating Polytech puts us at 2-0 in the Henlopen North. We need to take this momentum into next week as we play Laurel at home Monday and then head to Rhode Island for two matches.”
