Twelve players from the Cape Class of 2025 were celebrated on the Legends Stadium pitch Oct. 22, and then the Vikings took care of business by downing the Sussex Tech squad 7-1 in front of fans, friends and family.
Cape is 8-4-2, while the Ravens move to 7-5.
Senior Brandon Loucks started the scoring quickly just one minute into the contest with a fancy bouncing shot over Tech goalie Austin Chavez off a Donnacha Hefferan assist.
Senior Brady Spiegel got a tally on the board at the 13-minute mark from Jerzey Haines. Sophomore Seth Benjamin got in on the scoring from a Spiegel pass.
The Vikings went into the halftime break with a commanding 3-0 lead, but they weren’t finished.
Senior Giovanni Barney scored twice, just four minutes apart, to start the second half off assists from Spiegel and John Flynn.
Senior Cardin Benjamin gave a lead pass to a flying Evan Burris, who tapped the ball past Esteban Gonzalez for the Vikings’ sixth goal.
“It was a cool goal,” said Benjamin. “I’m glad he was able to get there to put it in the cage.”
Tech got on the board when Garcia Velasquez turned on the afterburners and flew past the Cape defense to put up an unassisted score in the 57th minute.
Two Cape sophomores finished off the scoring, as Austin Tyndall blasted a shot into the goal off an assist by Jackson Hess with one minute remaining on the clock.
The Vikings outshot the Ravens 16-5 and held a 9-4 edge in corner kicks.
Senior keeper Jake Hutchison and sophomore Lawson Whaley teamed for four saves, while Ravens keepers Austin Chavez and Esteban Gonzalez combined for nine stops.
“We’re super excited to get another win in the Henlopen North,” said Cape head coach Patrick Kilby. “We haven’t lost a match in the North. We’ve got a strong test ahead of us to qualify for the state tournament when we take on Sussex Central on Thursday night.”
