Cape soccer gets back on winning foot
After loses to Appoquinimink and Indian River, the Cape soccer squad got back on the winning track Sept. 12, with a 5-0 shutout of Smyrna at the Vikings’ Legends Stadium.
Cape outshot the Eagles 14-1 and scored twice in the first half, as Cardin Benjamin and Austin Tyndall hit the twine off assists from Seth Benjamin and Chase Archambault.
Seth Benjamin got in on the scoring in the second half, tallying a goal at the 45-minute mark. Evan Burris booted two goals, the first at the 60-minute mark, then another just five minutes later.
John Flynn, Tyndall and Brady Spiegel were credited with second-half helpers.
The Vikings took nine corners in the game.
Goalie Jake Hutchison had one save in the match. Smyrna’s Caleb Toberer, facing a barrage of Vikings scoring attempts, made nine stops.
“I think a big difference in this game and the last two games was our mentality,” said Cape captain Cardin Benjamin. “Right from the warmup, our boys were on it and everybody was there to play. No one was there to lose this game, and we need that mentality every single game.”
