You won’t find a bigger rivalry than Cape versus Sussex Academy soccer, and this season’s match went to the home team Vikings 5-0 Sept. 10 in front of a packed house at Legends Stadium.
Cape moves to 2-0, while Sussex Academy is 0-1.
Aldo Hernandez-Becerra scored twice in the first half – on a direct kick at the 22-minute mark and a penalty kick at the 39-minute mark.
The second half was led by Jack Schell as he recorded a hat trick. His first tally was from Carden Benjamin at the 50-minute mark, then 12 minutes later off a pass from Hernandez-Becerra. His final score came off a pass from Angel Arano with three minutes left in the contest.
The Vikings had a 14-4 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in penalty corners.
Cape keeper Dru Schneider made four stops, while Seahawks goalie Carter Norton made nine saves.
“We were very happy with the result,” said Cape head coach Patrick Kilby. “For us internally, we knew that winning this match would propel us in confidence. There are so many friendships and teammates between both programs. I have a lot of respect for R.J. [Dina] and Kyle [Wheatley]. They have a young program with a lot of talent that will develop this year and in years to come. I truly believe this rivalry will not be going anywhere. It’s our little version of the derbies that are played in the EPL. It’s truly a match for our community.”
Cape will host Sussex Tech Thursday, Sept. 15, while the Seahawks travel to Woodbridge.
