The Vikings got some Sportscenter-worthy play from senior goalie Matt Panyko and a strong second half offensive effort to score a 3-0 shutout over Northern Division rival Sussex Central Nov. 10 at Legends Stadium. Cape moves to 5-2-1, while the Golden Knights are 4-2.
“I’m very proud of the guys in a massive team effort,” said head coach Patrick Kilby. “We were down two starters and showed that we have depth up and down the roster.”
Nick Panyko started off the scoring 18 minutes into the third quarter with a right-footed blast off a pass from Jorge Lagunes. Jacob Alt put a header on goal at 67 minutes. Austin Rhue ended the goal storm with an unassisted 40-yard blast over the Knights’ goalkeeper at the 77-minute mark.
Each team took six shots on goal. Central’s Angel Castellanos-Ventura stopped three shots, while Cape’s Matthew Panyko delivered the shutout by stopping all six of the Golden Knights’ shots.
“We truly have to look at the play of Matt Panyko in goal,” Kilby said. “He has made some amazing saves over the span of the season, but his performance against Sussex Central will be one that we reflect on when the season has come to an end.”
Cape will host Indian River Thursday, Nov. 12. The Vikings senior night is postponed until Wednesday, Nov. 18.
