The Cape soccer team pulled off its third shutout in a row Sept. 20, as the Vikings defeated Sussex Central 3-0. Cape moves to 4-0, while the Golden Knights are 2-2.
The Knights and the Vikings had a knock-down, drag-out first half where neither team could get the ball in the twine. But the second half was a totally different story, as the Vikings turned on the afterburners to score three goals in a 12-minute span.
Niko Panyko scored the first goal off a pass from Jack Schell at the 42-minute mark. Evan Burris hit the twine from Panyko at the 50th minute, then Collin Sivels put the ball past Knights keeper Antony Ortiz-Vasquez at the 54-minute mark from Gannon Burris.
“We know that Central is always going to be a tough match,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “We know that it is a match we need to win each year if we are going to be in competition for a conference championship or state tournament berth. We try not to look ahead, but this match was circled on our calendar well in advance. Our guys came out against a very good team and took it. I am very proud of them, as this was a match we lost last year.”
Cape outshot the Knights 6-3 and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Vikings keeper Dru Schneider and Jake Hutchison teamed for three saves. Sussex Central keepers Antony Ortiz-Vasquez and Justin Glasco shared three stops.
The Vikings travel to Worcester Prep Friday, Sept. 23, while the Knights travel to Concord Thursday, Sept. 22.
