Cape soccer shuts out Ravens 4-0

Vikings move to 4-2-1
November 8, 2020

Not many sports rivalries can match the battles between Sussex Tech and Cape in soccer squads, but the Nov. 5 match was all Vikings, as they shut out the Ravens 4-0. The Vikings move to 4-2-1 with the win, while the Ravens are 0-4-1.

Nick Panyko started the scoring for the Vikings at the seven-minute mark off a pass from Juan Larez-Carrillo. The first half ended with the Vikings up by that score.

Connor Hochrein continued to be a force in front of the goal with a header from a corner kick by Jacob Alt at 50 minutes. Panyko hit the back of the twine for his second goal from Hochrein at the 69-minute mark, and Hochrein finished the scoring with an assist from Alt at 75 minutes.

The Vikings outshot the Ravens 15-8 and held a 10-9 edge in corner kicks.

Matt Panyko stopped eight Tech shots, while Ravens’ goalie Brian Villeda-Salinas stopped nine scoring attempts.

“It is nice to find some consistency in our level play and to see it carry from game to game,” said Cape head coach Patrick Kilby. “Our ability to score off set pieces and restarts is an amazing attribute to have in our arsenal. We need to continue to work harder in trying to score within the flow of play. Defensively, we were organized and it showed, as we earned the clean sheet. I’m overall very pleased in our win against Sussex Tech. We had back-to-back ties in 2019 and 2018, and we haven’t beaten them since 2017.”

“The boys played a hard-fought game and displayed a positive energy throughout,” said Sussex Tech head coach Kyle Weed, who took over the reigns from longtime coach Carlos Villa. “We feel that our team chemistry is getting better every game. We are excited for the rest of the season and will keep working hard as we move forward.“

The Vikings host Sussex Central Tuesday, Nov. 10, while the Ravens host Caesar Rodney.
