Cape softball comes back swinging over Conrad

Vikings move to 5-0 with victory
April 7, 2025

An example of the never-say-die attitude shone through April 5 as the Vikings softball team, down 9-1 in the third inning, plated nine runs in the last three innings to defeat Conrad High School 12-10.

Each team had 11 hits in the contest.

Before the bottom of the third, the Red Wolves had taken a 9-0 lead thanks to Cape committing four costly errors.

Ava Calciano sparked Cape in the bottom of the third with a leadoff triple and scored on a Alivia Heers RBI ground out to make it 9-1. Jordynn Bowe led off the fourth with an inside-the-park homer to bring Cape within seven at 9-2.

After two walks and an error, Heers knocked in two more runs with a single to center to make it 9-4. Two more runs scored on a wild pitch, and the score was 9-6.

After an Conrad error and a walk, Milena Buehler had an RBI single to make it 9-7, and Calciano made it 9-8 on a single.

In the bottom of the sixth, Marsh singled and Frederick was hit with a pitch. Bowe hit an RBI single, scoring Marsh, and a wild throw allowed Frederick to score and tie the game at 10. Bowe then scored on a passed ball, and the Vikings took the lead 11-10. Another error allowed the 12th run to score.

It was tense in the seventh as Conrad loaded the bases, but the game ended on a wild double play with Cape taking the 12-10 victory.

Senior pitcher Abby Marsh went the distance in the circle, picking up nine strike out while allowing 11 hits and three walks.

“I don’t have words to describe the home run,” said freshman Jordynn Bowe. “I’ve got to admit that I started to cry in the dugout. I just love playing on this team, and I love these girls. People know us, so we are not underdogs now. Everyone is throwing their best at us. We are going to have to come out strong every game.”

“We had a rough start,” said senior pitcher Abby Marsh. “ But I wouldn’t want to be in the circle with anyone else behind me. We all kind of got down on ourselves, and it was eating at us. But we regained our confidence and we started to hit. It was awesome.”

“One at bat, one hit at a time,” Bowe added.

The 5-0 Vikings travel to Indian River Tuesday, April 8, to face the 3-1 Indians.
