Winter weather and swimming just don’t seem to mix.
Following a trio of postponements due to weather in mid-January, Cape’s swim teams are in the midst of a three-meet week against Henlopen Conference opponents. Taking on Sussex Tech to begin the week, the Vikings made sure to get off the blocks fast.
The girls, led by senior Anna Sullivan’s victories in the 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle, remained undefeated with a 110-59 victory over the Ravens. Junior Jenna Reinhold won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, and joined Sullivan on the first-place 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. Isla Touw continued her impressive freshman year with a win in the 200 freestyle and was a member of both winning relays, along with sophomore Sidney Caldwell. Cape’s girls won eight of their 11 heats.
With a resounding 117-38 victory, the boys have constructed a winning streak to build confidence heading into the next two meets. A trio of Vikings, senior Kevin Lewandowski and juniors Holden Tighe and Shane Toback, each won two solo events. The three joined senior Brian Fleming on the winning 200-medley relay team. Fleming, Lewandowski, and Tighe were also on the 200 freestyle relay team with Ellis Jack that nabbed first place. Freshman Cole Huxtable’s victory in the 500 freestyle gave Cape’s boys nine victories in the eleven events.
Cape will try to beat out a talented Caesar Rodney boys’ team when they take on the Riders at the Milford Boys & Girls Club at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 31. The Vikings end the week against Indian River at the Sussex Academy Aquatics Center. Both teams will honor their seniors during the Friday, Feb. 2, meet set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
