Cape track teams place fourth in Henlopen Conference Indoor Championships

The 2017 Henlopen Conference Indoor Championships, held Jan. 26 at the Worcester County Parks and Recreation Center in Snow Hill, Md., was won by the Dover boys with 168 points. The Eagles were closely followed by Caesar Rodney with 150.

The remaining six teams included Smyrna with 110 points, Cape Henlopen with 43, Sussex Tech with 39 and Lake Forest with 38.  

Smyrna ran away with the girls’ title with 224 points, chased by Caesar Rodney with 103. The rest of the field included Dover with 96, Cape Henlopen with 81, Sussex Tech with 30 and Lake Forest with 29.

Top performances for the Cape boys were Ryan Head, second in pole vault, clearing 11 feet; Jacob Osborn, fifth in shot put with a personal-best throw of 39 feet; Garrett Elgin, seventh in the long jump with a leap of 18-feet-3-inches; and Greg Boyce, third in the 3,200 meters in 10:27 and fourth in the 1,600 in 4:48.

Cape’s Olivia Brozefsky won the conference title in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:43. Jackie Cannon was seventh in the same race at 13:41.

Ce’yra Middleton placed second in the shot with a throw of 35-feet-4-inches, while MacKenzie Parker placed fourth at 33-feet-1-inch.

Meredith Lockwood placed third in the 800 with a time of 2:36.

Brozefsky was third in the 1,600 in 5:47, while Jackie Cannon placed fifth in 5:54 and Darby Klopp notched eighth in 6:01 in the same event.

Cape picked up points in the 55-meter hurdles with Sam Wyatt finishing seventh in 10:25 and Michiah Rushin eighth in 10:42.

In the pole vault, Leah Marsh cleared 6-feet for fourth. Rose Minni picked up seventh in the triple jump in 31-feet-6-inches.

The DIAA Championship meet is set for Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Prince George’s Sports Complex in Maryland.
