Cape volleyball coach Tyler Coupe’s squad graduated four starters from the last season’s 12-3 team, but he is looking for senior leadership to reload his team for the upcoming conference season.
“We had 42 players come out for the team this year,” said Coupe. “The seniors are going to be playing with a young squad. The 19 freshmen who came out will get good experience for the future.”
Coupe gave accolades to Beacon and Mariner middle schools for great coaching of the young players.
“The freshmen got such great experience from the middle schools,” Coupe said. “I can see three or four freshmen making our varsity team.”
The team traveled to Friends School Aug. 19 to compete in a 10-team scrimmage.
“The play day at Friends was our first time having varsity alone, as we've been practicing both teams together this week,” said Coupe. “For not having any time solo, I was pleasantly surprised with how the girls played throughout the day. We certainly got exposed in regard to what we need to improve on - serve-receive, techniques, communication - but it's great to get those things addressed this early before regular season begins. We had a lot of new players, whether it be freshmen or former JV players, able to get their first taste of what top-tier volleyball looks like. I'm excited to get back in the gym this week and look forward to hosting our play day on Aug. 26.”
Cape will host a nine-team scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 26, where the Vikings will match up against two-time state champ Delaware Military Academy and powerhouses Unrsuline, Tatnall, Conrad, Newark Charter and Tower Hill, among others. Cape will host Caravel, Caesar Rodney and St. Elizabeth Saturday, Sept. 2, for the final scrimmage before the season opener with Delmarva Christian Friday, Sept. 8.
