Four members of the Cape Henlopen wrestling team won their weight class and the team won the title after sending a record seven grapplers to the finals of the Panther Invitational in Paint Branch, Md.
Cape scored 263 points, far ahead of Oakdale with 200, Broadneck with 187.5 and Sherwood with 187.5. Indian River of the Henlopen Conference placed seventh in the field of 23 teams with 11.5 points.
Champions for Cape were Austin Guerrieri (106), Nick Walker (150), Luke Arnold-Decyk (190) and Patrick Donahue (215).
Donahue was voted Outstanding Wrestler of the upper weights after going 4-0 with three pins and a tech fall.
“We wrestled really well all weekend,” said coach Chris Mattioni. “We had 11 guys place in the top six. We have Smyrna at home this Wednesday, then wrestle at DMA on Friday.”
Jayvion Chandler of Indian River took the 175-pound title with a 6-4 win in the finals over Josh Qgunlade of Albert Einstein.
Placing second for Cape were Cale Baker (113), Brady Cole (157) and Trevor Costello (285). Tripp Gannon (126) wrestled back to grab third place.
Hayden Wheeler (165) placed fourth, while Max Meadows (132) and Colin Poulis (132) each placed fifth.
Takedowns - Sussex Central placed fourth at the War on the Shore tournament behind Xavier CT, Mt. St. Joe’s and St. Mary’s Ryken. Weight-class champion for the Golden Knights was Evan Cordrey (132). Gabe Cannon (175) placed second, while Talan Savage (138), Chase Murray (126) and Malachi Stratton (120) each placed fourth.
