The Cape wrestling team is facing what promises to be a pretty good year with top eliminators up and down the 14-weight-class lineup.
The Vikings opened the dual-meet season at home Dec. 7 on Teacher Appreciation Night, beating Lake Forest 66-6, recording eight pins and a forfeit.
The best matches of the evening went the distance, as Seth Fleming of Lake earned a 5-4 decision over Justin Wright at 138 and Grant Ford of the Spartans beat freshman Mark Knestaut 7-4 at 160.
Cape’s South Carolina transfer Zeke Bean had a tough match at 152, but outlasted the Spartans’ Dean Fleming 6-2, while Zack Flores Reyes went beyond double overtime to defeat Jordan Springer 3-2 at 285.
Sierra Gloria (yes, she’s a girl) received a forfeit at 106, followed by four straight first-period pins from Keith Harmon at 113, Anthony Caruso at 120, Andre Currie at 126 and Max Norquest at 132. The Vikings led 30-0 after five bouts.
“Winning by pinning is nice, getting all those bonus points,” said coach Chris Mattioni, now in his 22nd year. “We have guys in the wrestling room who can really push each other.”
The win-by-pin storyline continued as Vinnie Diego at 145, Cory Lawson at 170, Chris Handlin at 182, Holden Kammerer at 195 and Brandon Mays Harp at 220 all won by fall.
The going gets seriously tougher for the grapplers who “go Philly” Saturday, Dec. 10, competing at the Travis Manion Tournament at LaSalle High School, then wrestle at Caesar Rodney Wednesday, Dec. 14, followed by the Beast of the East Tournament at the University of Delaware Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 18 and 19.
