February 6, 2022

Cape wrestling closed out the regular season Feb. 5, with dual-meet victories over St. Georges Tech 55-20 and William Penn 46-24.

The Vikings sandwiched a Senior Day celebration between the two matches. Coach Chris Mattioni mentioned that the Class of 2022 contributed to the team’s first state title in 2021 and its first Henlopen Conference dual-meet crown since 1990.

“Cape has talent in the pipeline thanks in part to those guys being dedicated to success and for their leadership in the community,” Mattioni said.

The Vikings closed out the regular season with a record of 11-2, earning them the No. 1 seed in the Division I postseason dual-meet tournament. Cape will host William Penn at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 9. The seeding for Division I was Cape, Salesianum, Caesar Rodney, Smyrna, Milford, Sussex Central, St. Georges and William Penn.

The semifinals and finals for Division I and Division II will be contested Saturday, Feb. 12, at Smyrna High School.

Wednesday’s home matches are William Penn at Cape, St. Georges at Salesianum, Sussex Central at Caesar Rodney and Milford at Smyrna.

The Division II field for the state duals has McKean at Caravel, Delmar at DMA, Indian River at Laurel and Red Lion at Lake Forest.
