January 16, 2025

Cape’s Big House was the stage for five hours of wrestling Jan. 15, as the Vikings welcomed Delaware Military Academy and Polytech.

Fans who had been penned up for a week escaped to a bigger pen to cheer on their grapplers, who amazingly made weight after a week of school shutdowns due to snow.

Cape lost to Delaware Military Academy 45-25 in a heated match that was tied at 26-26 with four bouts remaining.

“The only move I considered making was moving Patrick [Donahue] up from 215 to 285 to wrestle [Cael] DeNigris, but he weighed in over 280, and I just didn't want to risk injury to Patrick,” said Cape coach Chris Mattioni. “DMA moved Cole Perrin [top ranked at 106] up to 113 and Blake [Walker] gave him a great match before losing 7-3.”

Cape wins were by Nick Walker, 150, tech fall; Yusef Smith, 165, fall; Luke Arnold-Decyk, 190, major decision; Patrick Donahue, 215, fall; and Austin Guerierri, 120, tech fall.

DMA wins came from William Martin, 157, fall; Justin Ryland, 165, tech fall; Cael DeNigris, 285, fall; Griffin Glenn, 106, fall; Cole Perrin, 113, decision 7-3; Nicholas Papiron, 126, decision 5-3; Gavin Mundy, 132, major decision; Piero Papili, 138, fall; and Jackson Grandel, 144, fall.

Cape wrestled Polytech in the second match of the night, which started at 157 with a pair of Cape wins by Aidan Baum and Carson Tuer for a 10-0 lead.

But with a full squad and no forfeits, the Panthers quickly got back in the game with wins at 175 from Carter Dulin and 190 from Israel Russell to trail 10-9 after four of 14 bouts.

The teams exchanged pins with Patrick Donahue at 215 and Navain Cooper at 285. The score was 16-15 Cape after six matches.

Starting back at 106, Cape won seven of the last eight matches to sail away for a 53-19 victory.

Cape wins were from Nolan Wright, 106, major decision; Austin Guerierri, 120, fall; Cale Baker, 126, fall; Tripp Gannon, 132, fall; Max Meadows, 138, decision 15-13; Colin Poulis, 144, fall; and Nick Walker, 150, fall.

Polytech’s Jase Diaz, 113, won by 13-5 major decision.

Cape will wrestle William Penn at home at 5 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 18.
