Cape wrestling roars back to defeat Sussex Tech 49-15

Four bouts into the wrestling match at Sussex Tech Feb. 1, the heavily favored Vikings trailed a young Sussex Tech squad 15-3.

Cape’s Billy Ott won by decision over Andrew Hawkins at 220 to open the match. Then Sussex Tech sophomore Jamie Schirmer held down Cape’s Zach Flores in triple overtime for a 3-2 win. Cape forfeited at 106 followed by Tech’s Case Flood pinning Keith Harmon at 113. The house at Raven haven was beginning to chirp.

Cape responded by winning the remaining 10 matches for a decisive 49-15 team victory, boosting their season dual-meet record to 12-1.

The Vikings inserted two grapplers from junior varsity to cover for injuries in the lineup. Cape’s Mason Karrow won by fall over Thomas Bunting at 138, and the Vikings’ Zane Kessler decisioned Robert Marsh 6-4 at 170.   

“Those were big matches for our JV kids,” said coach Chris Mattioni. “We’re going to have a lot of positions to fill next season.”

Anthony Caruso earned a tech fall at 4:00 over Dawson Bellew at 120, Andre Currie decisioned Hunter Hineline 9-7 at 126, Max Norquest pinned Roberto Santos at 132, Vinnie Diego decisioned Michael Covey 6-3 at 145, Dante Jaquet pinned Royuan Jones at 152, Cory Lawson earned a fall over Tarryl Sturgis at 160, Chris Handlin earned a tech fall over Darvin Perez at 182 and Holden Kammerer decisioned Robert Van Pelt 3-0 at 195.

Cape will host St. Georges Tech at 6 p.m., Monday, Feb. 6. The Hawks are 5-3, having lost to Smyrna 46-21, William Penn 34-30, and Milford 44-36.

The dual-meet championships are Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Smyrna. The Henlopen Conference Championships begin Friday, Feb. 17, at Sussex Central, followed by the the DIAA Individual Championships at Dover beginning Friday, Feb. 24.
