The Cape girls’ lacrosse team has some furiously fast people in the middle of the field that can fly coast-to-coast like the Blue Angels heading to an air show.
The Vikings sonic boomed the Auks of Archmere 20-3 April 26, behind eight different goal scorers. Nine goals came off assists.
Cape improved to 9-0-1 on the season with five games remaining. Archmere dropped to 8-3.
“Archmere is a good team, and one of several this year who will be tough in the playoffs," said coach Lindsey Underwood. “I see our players every day in practice, so I forget how fast they are. Like I’ve been saying all season, we play best when we play fast and come out hard.”
Cape’s premier finisher Macy Steinwedel led the scoring with seven goals. Claire Lopez added four goals, while Amara Fruchtman, Ally Diehl and Lina Frederick each tallied two. Single goals were scored by Regan Best, Mackenzie Todd and Haley Gamuciello.
Assist makers were Fruchtman with three, Lopez with two and Steinwedel, Diehl, Gamuciello and Frederick with one apiece.
Abbey Schaeffer was credited with five saves.
Archmere goals were scored by Giada Giordano, Ciara Knapp and Claudia Koch. Goalie Mia Luce was credited with four saves.
Notes: Unsung midfielders Avary Miller and Mairead Rishko drop back on defense and join Madison Mark and Quinn Nutter to give Cape a formidable back line of skilled players, all of whom can run. Archmere is at Caesar Rodney Wednesday, April 30. The Riders are 9-1 under coach Gina Voss. CR will close out the season hosting Cape Tuesday, May 13. Tatnall is 4-4 but back to full strength after early season injuries. They will host unbeaten Tower Hill Tuesday, April 29. Cape next embarks on a three-game week, hosting North Caroline Monday, April 28; playing at Ocean City, N.J., Thursday, May 1; and hosting Germantown Friends Saturday, May 3.
