Carolyn Harper, enjoyed helping others
Carolyn Harper, 90, of Millsboro passed away peacefully at home of natural causes Sunday, Sept. 13, 2020.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, William J. Harper; her daughter Judy Harper of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and her son, Jim Harper of Basking Ridge, N.J.; as well as her adoring lap companion, Ben (Siamese cat).
Carolyn was born in Plainfield, N.J., and married and raised her family in North Plainfield. Her life was always about helping others. During her 26 years in Millsboro she was very active at Bethel United Methodist Church in Lewes. She volunteered for Read Aloud Delaware, to pass on her love of reading to children who were captivated by the stories and the narrator. She was also part of the group who began the Parkinson's Education and Support Group, the first in this area. Carolyn was an avid walker, and one of her favorite walks was the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk. Rain drops wouldn’t deter her from walking, and she frequently could be sighted walking the loop through Gull Point.
Later in life, while losing her sight, she became involved with BlindSight Delaware and resumed her passion for reading through audio books. As life slowed down, Carolyn took pleasure in the little things, a pop-up card with flowers inside, a bowl of prayer wishes, a quart of homemade soup from a neighbor or a call about almost nothing. Never old, always young at heart, she will be dearly missed by family, friends and neighbors.
A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date. Memorial donations can be made in her memory to Bethel United Methodist Church, Lewes, DE 19958, or Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE.
