Caruso and Crenshaw of Beacon win Henlopen Conference wrestling titles

February 11, 2015

The gym at Milford Academy was incubator hot with hundreds of middle school bodies Saturday afternoon for the Henlopen Conference Wrestling Championships.

The 16-bout format single-mat championships took two hours, 6 to 8 p.m., to complete, and that followed a lightning round of consolation matches as by rule middle school grapplers can only wrestle five times in one day, so in anticipation there were enough medals to share for third- and fifth-place finishes.

Beacon crowned two champions with Anthony Caruso at 100, a three-time finalist, winning his second championship while Jacob Crenshaw won his first championship at 106 pounds.

Third-place finishes for Beacon were Jack Lee 82, Jackson Handlin 112, Robert Marsh  145, Billy Ott 170, and 250 where Edwin Lange shared third place with Kasim Lewis of Georgetown.

Mariner sent two wrestlers to the finals. Jonah Robertson 170  injured his shoulder during the championship bout and defaulted. Jamie Shirmer 250  got caught and lost by fall.

Michael Wright of Georgetown won the 185-pound title.

Expanded results will be available if they are ever published online as promised.
