A rainy night in Georgetown and a redemption song for Sussex Central 126-pounder Evan Cordrey.
The Castle was jammed with fans on Alumni Night, as the bleachers were mixed and matched with muppets from Cape and Sussex Central. Grapplers from both schools were reminiscing, just boys talking noise.
The third period of the final match saw the Golden Knights leading Cape 33-30. Holt Baker led Evan Cordrey 2-0 in the final period with Baker on the bottom. Cordrey turned Baker to his back twice for six points to win 6-2 and give Sussex Central a 36-30 win.
“It was a good night for high school wrestling in Delaware,” said coach Shane Miller. “The crowd was just great. It's good for kids to wrestle in this atmosphere. Baker beat Evan in last year's state tournament, so Evan focused during the season that this was a match he wanted to win.”
Cape wins came from Tripp Gannon (106) over Austen Decker (fall, 1:54); Josh Wright (138) over Justin Craig (fall, 2:48); Andrew Schaen (144) over Andrew Long (11-4); Luke Bender (165) over Jaydn Craig (fall, 3:01); C.J. Fritchman (175) over Gabe Cannon (9-3); and Sean Costello (285) over Michael Harmon (fall, 3:51).
Central wins were Malachi Stratton (113) over Rony Perez (fall, 2:54); Chase Murray (120) over Max Meadows (7-2); Evan Cordrey (126) over Holt Baker (6-2); Talan Savage (132) over Nick Walker (7-0); Jayden Drummond (150) over Brady Cole (8-7); Cody Layfield (157) over Hayden Wheeler (fall, 0:32); Ivan Neal (190) over Luke Arnold-Decyk (fall, 1:54); and Ryder Robinson (215) over Patrick Donahue (fall, 0:07).
Cape will wrestle at St. Georges Saturday, Jan. 28, then host Milford Wednesday, Feb. 1.
Sussex Central hosts Smyrna Friday, Jan. 27, then travels to Caravel Monday, Jan. 30.
Takedowns: Cape captain Alex Taylor (190-215) did not wrestle in the match due to concussion protocol. Salesianum beat DMA 35-25 in another key Wednesday night match. Sallies will wrestle at Caesar Rodney Saturday, Jan. 28, then host Sussex Central Saturday, Feb. 4, before heading to Cape Saturday, Feb. 11.
