Volunteers joined CHEER board members and employees March 17 to deliver meals to homebound seniors for the annual March for Meals campaign, a day set aside to raise awareness of CHEER’s Meals on Wheels program.
CHEER CEO Ken Bock said seniors were isolated as a result of the pandemic, with many elderly unable to come to senior centers or grocery stores. Sustaining seniors in their own homes is more important than ever, Bock said.
“The Meals on Wheels program has been a lifeline,” Bock said, suggesting volunteers spend a few minutes speaking with the seniors they visit. “So often, you’re going to be the only person they see today.”
Officials noted that 2022 is the 50th anniversary of Meals on Wheels America and the 25th anniversary of Meals on Wheels Delaware.
The CHEER Meals on Wheels program delivers more than 230,000 meals to eligible homebound seniors in Sussex County each year. For more information on CHEER services, call 302-515-3040 or go to cheerde.com.
