Christmas golf gift opportunities

There is still time to find something nice for golf-loving friends and family members among the Cape Region’s golf courses and other golf retail options.

American Classic Golf Club

Located in Midway just off Postal Lane, American Classic is a well-run nine-hole course with a relaxed atmosphere, owned and operated by the Morrison family.

Britt Morrison put together the club’s first Holiday Gift Guide, which can be seen at americanclassicgolf.com.

She highlighted their fleece-lined American Classic beanies, which come in four optional color schemes, at $25.99 each. They are also selling a bundled set of American Classic hats and golf towels for $25, a savings of $10.

Hooper’s Landing

Hooper’s Landing offers public golf in western Sussex County at reasonable prices. Cape Henlopen High alum Mike Connor is the head golf pro.

This year’s sales items include Callaway Chrome Soft golf balls at $70 for two dozen. Connor said their ladies golf shoes are at “blowout” prices. He is also running a golf lesson holiday sale, with a choice of $50 off a five-lesson package or $10 off for a single one-hour session.

Midway Par 3

This par 3 course is a longtime Cape Region favorite for locals and the tourist trade, located just off Route 1 at 34578 Pinnacle Road near the northbound turn toward Kings Highway.

Barbara Moore highlighted several 20 percent off Christmas specials, such as sunglasses, towels, caps and hats and gloves. Ten-round golf packages are also on sale (juniors $85, seniors $104, friends and family $112). Other discounted round sales are two for $25, four for $45 and six for $65.

Steve Smith PGA

In 2016, I profiled local PGA golf professional Steve Smith after I watched him give an impromptu lesson to two struggling golfers at Rookery South. That piece became the first one in my book, “Hole By Hole.”

Smith operates his golf lesson business using the simulator equipment at 365 Golf. As he said, “Weather is not a problem!”

The Rookery

The Rookery offers two golf courses at its Milton and Milford locations, both off Route 1.

Dec. 14-15 there are sales at both locations, with different options at each. At the north course, in-stock shoes are 50 percent off, with golf bags discounted 25 percent and all golf shirts at $15. Clubs are also on sale for as low as $69.

At the south course, women’s and men’s outerwear are 50 percent off, and all golf shirts are $25. Women’s summer shirts are $19.99, and the 25 percent discount for golf bags and shoes is ongoing.

The pros at both locations are also offering a limited number of golf lessons at reduced rates. You can buy half-hour lessons from Kyle Deas or Eric Willey at the north course for $35. Thirty-minute sessions with Butch Holtzclaw or Chris Osberg at the south course are on sale for $40.

Stenger's Shamrock Farms Par 3

Bob and Wendy Stenger’s nice little par 3 course on Saw Mill Road west of Milton is open year-round. Greens fees are $15 and pull cart rentals are only a dollar on this easy-walking layout.

Club Champion

Cape Region golfers who recently spent at least $1,000 at Club Champion, or who plan to do so soon, can take advantage of the club fitting company’s new Member Rewards Program. For those who planned to treat themselves for Christmas, or who have generous friends or family members, this can be an added bonus.

Customers are enrolled in the program as soon as the dollar threshold is met, including those who already bought at least $1,000 in goods and services since last January. Program benefits include free or discounted fittings, complimentary practice time with the Trackman monitors in the fitting bays, free loft and lie adjustments on clubs bought from Club Champion, free installation on grips bought there, and more.
