Civil War author Tom Ryan to sign books in Rehoboth Aug. 24
Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach will host author Thomas J. Ryan at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 24, as he signs his latest book about the Civil War, “Lee is Trapped and Must Be Taken: Eleven Fateful Days after Gettysburg, July 4-14, 1863.”
The 11-day period after Gettysburg was a battle of wits to determine which commander better understood the information he received and directed the movements of his army accordingly. The book examines the immediate aftermath of the battle and addresses how Maj. Gen. George G. Meade organized and motivated his Army of the Potomac in response to President Lincoln’s mandate to bring about the “literal or substantial destruction” of Gen. Robert E. Lee’s retreating Army of Northern Virginia.
In 2017, while he was researching the book, Ryan was awarded the 2017 Ed Bearss Award, given each year to a deserving author working on a nonfiction book about the Civil War in Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia or the Shenandoah Valley.
Ryan is the author of two other books about the Civil War. His book “Spies, Scouts, and Secrets in the Gettysburg Campaign” won the Bachelder-Coddington Literary Award and the Gettysburg Civil War Round Table Distinguished Book Award. He also has written “Essays on Delaware During the Civil War: A Political, Military and Social Perspective.”
Ryan retired after 38 years in intelligence-related capacities for the U.S. Army and the Department of Defense. He is a longtime member of the American Battlefield Trust, Gettysburg Foundation, Fort Delaware Society and the Delaware Historical Society.
