Clear Space presents Halloween performance of Heathers: The Musical!
This year, skip the tricks and treat oneself to a special Halloween performance of “Heathers: The Musical!” at Clear Space Theatre! The curtain rises at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 31 for the final performance of this killer musical.
Based on the 1989 cult film of the same name, “Heathers” has it all - a lovely heroine, Veronica (Devon Frieder), her smoldering heartthrob, J.D. (Rodrigo Zaragoza), a clique of high school hotties, some geeks, the jocks, the inevitable clashes, mayhem galore - even a grave yard scene! What could be better?!
Says Frieder, “This show offers laughs, twists, turns, and a killer score. Diehard fans of the movie will see all their favorite moments brought to life - with plenty of new surprises - and newcomers are in for a real treat! Whether people have seen the classic cult movie or not, I highly recommend this show.”
Adds Zaragoza, “When the movie came out, teens felt they could really identify with it; they thought it portrayed what was actually happening every day in American high schools. Audiences for this show are sure to find it familiar, too: People are or were or knew these characters, and can readily relate to the angst and anguish and action.”
With lyrics, music and book by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe, “Heathers” opened Off-Broadway in 2014, and was nominated for a 2014 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music.
Frieder, who also choreographed the show, spoke to that music: “The music is brilliant and always drives the plot forward. My goal is for every move to be dramatically motivated - and the action in each scene dictates the dancing pretty clearly.” Adds Zaragoza, “Some of that action - well, it’s going to surprise people, and keep them on the edge of their seats!”
Both Frieder and Zaragoza have appeared in “Heathers” previously, playing the same roles and opposite each other. And both are delighted at the opportunity to reprise the roles. Says Frieder, “I’ve never played a more rewarding role. It’s demanding from both a performance and emotional perspective, but it’s incredibly fulfilling.” Zaragoza concurs, saying, “I love having the chance to go even more deeply into my character’s mind. What I love most about J.D. is that he’s not a cliché character at all; it’s a great challenge, working to discover and then portray the ‘why’s’ of who he is and what he does.”
Sponsored by Dogfish Head, “Heathers” runs weekends from Friday, Oct. 19 through Sunday, Oct. 28. Performances are at 7 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, and at 3 p.m., Sundays. There also are two special performances: Thursday, Oct. 25, at 11 a.m., and Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m. Tickets for each show are $17-$32, and may be purchased at www.clearspacetheatre.org, or 302-227-2270.
