DCF awards grants to nonprofits helping low-income residents
Through the Benjamin F. Potter Trust Grants Fund, the Delaware Community Foundation has awarded $250,000 to 13 nonprofit organizations serving the economically underprivileged in Kent County. Recipients also serving Sussex County include: First State Community Action Agency, $50,000 to help with homelessness prevention and diversion; Harry K Foundation, $22,000 to address childhood hunger; Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware, $45,000 to provide gently used clothing to children, teens and families; Caring Hearts Helping Hands Inc., $5,000 to purchase gifts for families with children who cannot afford presents during the holidays; Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Delaware, $13,500 for housing and support services for low- to moderate-income families; Milford Housing Development Corporation, $35,000 to provide home repairs to qualifying homeowners in Milford; Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, $20,000 to support the Kent County Breast Care Assistance Fund; Delaware Futures, $5,000 to help disadvantaged high school students prepare for college; Children’s Beach House Inc., $3,750 to support Kent County youth participating in its youth development program; and YWCA Delaware Inc., $5,000 to help Sexual Assault Response Center participants avoid, eliminate or alleviate financial emergencies caused by their victimization.
Dave Marshall pickleball camp Oct. 13-15
Dave Marshall Tennis & Fitness will host the Nike Pickleball Camp Friday, Oct. 13 through Sunday, Oct. 15, at its facility on Plantation Road outside Lewes. Sessions will run from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday; 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday; and 9 to 11 a.m., Sunday. Cost is $445 per person. The session will be run by Dr. Dave Marshall, a world-renowned tennis coach who also coaches on the pro pickleball tour with Megan Fudge and Ryler DeHeart. CHEER seeks Oct. 14 craft show vendors
CHEER Inc. is seeking vendors for its annual fall craft and hobby show set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Warren L. and Charles C. Allen Jr. CHEER Community Center, 20520 Sand Hill Road, Georgetown. Admission is free and open to the public. Merchandise ranges from books, baseball cards, toys, woodworking and T-shirts to leather goods, magazines, antiques, military memorabilia, jewelry and more.

Helping hands free community event set Oct. 14 in Milford
Milford Advocacy for the Homeless Inc. will host a helping hands free community event from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 14, in the parking lot at United Church Milford Campus, 985 N. DuPont Blvd., Milford.
Community members, especially those in need, are more than welcome.
Organizers are offering free food, clothes, haircuts, bike repair and health screenings. The event will be held rain or shine.
Milford Advocacy for the Homeless reaches out to offer assistance and support to those who are displaced and homeless in the community.

Out of the Darkness Walk set Oct. 14
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will hold a community walk starting at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 14, at Bicentennial Park, 220 NE Front St., Milford. Registration begins at 9 a.m. The one-mile walk will be an opportunity to boost awareness of suicide, which is a leading cause of death today. The Out of the Darkness Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope and support. It unites communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental health conditions have affected people’s lives and the lives of their loved ones. During the walk there will be opportunities to share messages of hope, healing and remembrance, along with honor beads. There is no fee to participate. SDTR barn dance fundraiser set Oct. 14
Southern Delaware Therapeutic Riding will hold its 7th annual barn dance from 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 14, at 17170 Harbeson Road, Milton. Tickets are $100 and include appetizers, a full barbecue dinner, beer, wine, nonalcoholic beverages and dessert. Entertainment includes music by the Mason Dixon Band, mechanical bull riding, a western-themed picture booth and table games. There will be live and silent auctions, and a 50/50 raffle. TidalHealth sets flu clinic at Apple-Scrapple Fest Oct. 14
TidalHealth will host a flu clinic from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Apple-Scrapple Festival in Bridgeville. Clinical teams providing walk-up vaccinations will be located at the TidalHealth Community Wellness Van next to the firehouse. Seasonal quadrivalent flu vaccinations will be administered to individuals 8 years of age or older. Patients ages 8 to 17 must bring a parent or legal guardian to sign consent forms. The quadrivalent flu shot is designed to protect against four different flu viruses to provide broader protection. A physician’s order is not necessary. Flu shots will be free. TidalHealth will not offer any COVID-19 testing or shots at this event.
Flu shots are encouraged for anyone over the age of 6 months, but especially for people over 65, those with heart or lung disorders, or at high risk for diseases or diabetes. TidalHealth will not offer high-dose flu shots for seniors at this event.
Participants are asked to wear a short-sleeved shirt for easy access to the upper arm. The vaccine being given is effective for everyone meeting the age restrictions.
Browseabout book club resumes in person Oct. 15
The Browseabout Books Book Club, celebrating its 27th year, has returned to meeting in person at Browseabout Books, 133 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach. Dave Marshall Tennis & Fitness will host the Pre-Halloween Pickleball Bash Sunday, Oct. 15, at its facility on Plantation Road outside Lewes. Men’s and women’s doubles will be played from 12 to 3 p.m., while mixed doubles is set for 3 to 6 p.m. Men’s and women’s doubles is limited to 20 teams. Mixed doubles will accommodate 30 teams. The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will hold an in-person and livestreamed service at 10 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 15, with the theme Get Messy. As part of Delaware Peace Week celebrations, guest worship speaker Lenore Bajare-Dukes will share practical and spiritual lessons for practicing peace where it’s most challenging. Healthy Living series kicks off Oct. 16 at CAMP Rehoboth
The Delaware Self-Management Programs will host a free Healthy Living workshop series from 1:30 to 4 p.m., Mondays, Oct. 16 to Nov. 20, at CAMP Rehoboth, 37 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach.
The program is designed for adults of all ages and focuses on learning to manage chronic health conditions. Program goals include helping people prevent and/or delay health complications, and teaching them how to deal with the frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation that may accompany chronic conditions.

First State Antique Tractor Club to meet Oct. 17
The First State Antique Tractor Club will hold its regular meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 17, at the Greenwood VFW, at the corner of Governors Avenue and Mill Street, Greenwood. Beebe and VIA to offer screenings and vaccinations Oct. 18
Beebe Healthcare and the Village Improvement Association will offer health screenings and flu vaccinations from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the VIA clubhouse, 415 N. Boardwalk, Rehoboth Beach.
Regular flu vaccinations for ages 18 to 64 and high-dose vaccinations for those over 65 will be offered. Health screenings include blood pressure, total cholesterol, blood sugar, body mass index and bone density. The Beebe Mobile Health Unit will be onsite and offer full lipid panels, hemoglobin A1C, and overdose prevention training. Fire, police and emergency personnel are invited for the overdose prevention training.
The screenings and vaccinations are free of charge and no appointment is needed. The public is welcome.
