County should subsidize EMS services

March 21, 2025

The Lewes ambulance corps is presently experiencing a financial deficit that could lead to bankruptcy and the closing of the ambulance service. This is extremely disturbing. The ambulance corps and fire companies provide a vital service to the community. They are not profit-making enterprises, but depend solely on the the government and local contributions to support their vital and necessary community services.

In the past 10 years, Sussex County has seen an explosion of growth in homes, making it the county with the largest growth in population in Delaware. With each new home, the county receives a sizable transfer tax, not to mention the fact that each new resident must also pay property taxes to the county. There is little doubt that Sussex County has seen, and continues to see, a significant growth in its revenues. We continue to contribute as much as we can and as often as we can to the ambulance and fire companies. I cannot fathom any reason why Sussex County Council members are not properly subsidizing the essential services of the fire and ambulance companies in this county.
