Courageous Hearts Equine Assisted Psychotherapy Therapy and Learning Center held a ribbon cutting, sponsored by the Milford Chamber of Commerce, and open barn event April 26 at its farm in Lincoln.
With funding from various state agencies Courageous Hearts Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Personal Development as practiced in the EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association) model is not about riding or horsemanship and all activities are completed on the ground.
EAP is a solution-focused, strengths-based model that incorporates horses experientially to promote emotional growth and learning. It is a collaborative effort between a licensed mental health clinician and an equine specialist working with clients and horses to address treatment goals.
Horses are large and powerful. This creates a natural opportunity for some to overcome fear and develop confidence. Working alongside a horse, in spite of those fears, creates confidence and provides wonderful insight when dealing with other intimidating and challenging situations in life.
