Dallin’s images offer peek into early 20th century
The aerial photographs of pilot J. Victor Dallin have been featured in the pages of the Cape Gazette many times in recent years.
Dallin, a former member of the Royal Air Force and veteran of World War I, formed Dallin Aerial Survey Company in 1924.
Operating out of the Philadelphia Municipal Airport, his company took thousands of aerial photographs throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. While most photographs featured the Philadelphia area, he produced many invaluable aerial images of the Cape Region in the 1930s.
His images show just how much things have changed in Rehoboth Beach and Lewes, but also many things that haven’t, such as the East End Lighthouse in Delaware Bay.
The Hagley Museum and Library holds thousands of Dallin’s photographs, most of which are publicly available in an online archive at digital.hagley.org.
