DAR honors Cape grads, chapter members

June 8, 2020

During a virtual meeting May 23, the Colonel David Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution honored two Cape Henlopen High School seniors and their parents.

The winner of the Colonel David Hall DAR Good Citizen Chapter Contest is Maddie Jo Betts, a member of the Class of 2020. Members enjoyed hearing Maddie read her winning essay. The chapter awarded her a certificate, pin, and $250. Maddie also won the state competition, and Delaware State Regent Gloria Lester awarded her an additional $250. Maddie's parents and sister were able to see her accept both awards.

The chapter awarded the DAR JROTC Bronze Medal and Pin, certificate and $100 award to Clara-Rosa Hertzog. Members were happy to meet both Clara and her parents at the meeting.

DAR chapter member Jennifer Horsley received a community service award. In Lewes one morning, Horsley noticed a woman slumped over her steering wheel while her car was still running. Horsley could not rouse her, so she notified a store manager to call 911 and stayed with the woman until the EMS team came to transport her to the hospital. The DAR Community Service Award certificate provides a unique opportunity for chapters to provide non-competitive recognition to worthy individuals and organizations for outstanding voluntary service. Horsley is most deserving.

Long-standing members were recognized with certificates: Holly Carter Clark for 50 years of membership; Leslie Sylvanus and Nancy Hoovis, 20 years; and Gerilyn Gaskill, Patricia McMichael, Margaret Beall, Sandra Eyer, Beatrice Parler, Gail Smith, and Michelle Truban, 10 years.

The NSDAR is a service organization for women who have descended from a patriot who served in the American Revolution. The group is dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing America's future through education.
